Strategic Narrative Development
SideCar partnered closely with Sakura Square’s leadership to clarify and elevate the project narrative, framing the site as a crucial redevelopment, as well as a cultural icon, economic driver and civic gathering place critical to downtown Denver’s future. We developed core messaging, proof points and talking points that connected history, culture, economic impact and global ties to Japan in a way that resonated with city leadership and funders.
Public Affairs–Adjacent Leadership
We served as a connective bridge between Sakura Square, City leadership and DDDA staff — coordinating briefings, facilitating conversations and ensuring the right stakeholders were engaged at the right moments. This included organizing an on-site tour with Mayor Mike Johnston, kicking off his introduction to the Sakura Square redevelopment and culminating in his participation in the ceremonial 200-pound tuna cutting during the Spirit of Japan Festival, a powerful visual moment showcasing civic support.
Media & Community Visibility
SideCar supported media relations and visibility efforts tied to major moments, including the Councilman Chris Hinds–sponsored mural unveiling and coverage around Sakura Square’s signature events. These efforts reinforced Sakura Square’s role as a living cultural district and strengthened public-facing momentum alongside the DDDA process.
DDDA Application Support
We played a hands-on role in shaping the DDDA application itself, helping craft clear, compelling responses around economic impact, inclusivity, cultural preservation, sustainability and financial structure — ensuring alignment with the DDDA Amended Plan and Downtown Area Plan priorities.
